Travelling to Barcelona and unsure what to do and see? Here's my 5 day itinerary for Barcelona to help you get the most out of your trip.
Day 1: Explore the Gothic Quarter
- Morning: Start your day at the iconic La Rambla, Barcelona's bustling pedestrian street. Enjoy breakfast at one of the cafes along the way or wander through the Mercado de La Boqueria a large public market where you can find lots of tasty food and drink vendors. *Tip: Watch out for pickpockets especially around La Rambla. Keep your wits about you as you would anywhere.
- Late Morning: Visit the Barcelona Cathedral, a stunning example of Catalan Gothic architecture.
- Afternoon: Wander through the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter, exploring shops, boutiques, and treat yourself at some of the local markets.
- Evening: Enjoy some tasty Spanish tapas.
*Food Recommendation: For Tapas my favourite has to be La Pepita, the food is some of the tastiest I've eaten.
Day 2: Gaudí's Masterpieces
- Morning: Head to Park Güell, one of Antoni Gaudí's most famous works. Spend the morning exploring the colourful mosaic sculptures and enjoy some panoramic views this beautiful city has to offer.
- Late Morning: Visit Casa Batlló, another one of Gaudí's architectural gems. Explore the unique design and learn about its history. Tip: You may need to book tickets in advance, as it can get busy.
- Afternoon: Take a guided tour of the Sagrada Familia, Gaudí's unfinished masterpiece. It's 140 years under construction with hopes of it to be finished sometime around 2030. It's Barcelona's most iconic landmark and not to be missed
- Evening: Relax with dinner at a nearby restaurant and admire the illuminated exterior of the Sagrada Familia at night.
Day 3: Montjuïc and Beach Day
- Morning: Take a cable car or walk up to Montjuïc Hill to visit Montjuïc Castle. Enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the city and learn all things about the castle's history.
- Late Morning: Explore the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc and catch one of its mesmerising light and music shows. Note: The Magic Fountain is temporarily closed due to the activation of the drought protocol in Barcelona city.
- Afternoon: Head to Barceloneta Beach for some swimming, relaxation and sunbathing. Enjoy some lunch at one of the beachfront restaurants.
- Evening: Take a stroll along the beach and watch the sunset over the Mediterranean Sea.
Day 4: Picasso, Modern Art and more
- Morning: Visit the Picasso Museum in the El Born district. View the extensive collection of Picasso's early works.
- Late Morning: Explore the El Born neighbourhood. It's known for its vibrant street art, boutique shops, and trendy cafes.
- Afternoon: Make your way to the MACBA (Museum of Contemporary Art) in the Raval district and discover works by contemporary artists.
- For a different and more interactive experience, head to The MOCO Museum, where you can discover works from artists like Banksy, Kaws, and many more. For some street art check out the iconic Kiss mural, "El món neix en cada besada," located in the Ciutat Vella district of Barcelona.
- Evening: Enjoy dinner at one of the restaurants in the El Raval neighbourhood and experience Barcelona's vibrant nightlife.
Day 5: Day Trip to Montserrat
- Morning: Take a day trip to the stunning Montserrat, a mountain range located about an hour outside of Barcelona. While there, make sure to visit the Benedictine monastery and marvel at the breathtaking views. It won't disappoint!
- Late Morning/Afternoon: Hike around the mountain trails or ride the funicular to the top for panoramic views.
- Evening: Return to Barcelona in the late afternoon and enjoy a farewell dinner at one of the city's top restaurants, reflecting on your unforgettable time in Barcelona and no doubt planning your next trip back!
